Wisdom teeth extraction

Wisdom teeth are large permanent teeth. They are also called the eights, because they are positioned last, in the back of the tooth row. Usually, wisdom teeth start appearing at the age of 18-25. The most common problem is the difficulty of the eights coming through. The reason is that generally by this time all the other teeth had long formed a tooth row, and there is basically no room for wisdom teeth.

The dilemma of whether or not to remove wisdom teeth is fairly subjective. Someone may have two of them, someone all four of them, and some may not have them at all. One may be unbothered by wisdom teeth their whole life and to others they may cause great discomfort.

• if the wisdom tooth has come through, is disturbing the arrangement of the tooth row and deforming the occlusion: it’s lower/higher that the other teeth or leaning to the side;
• if the wisdom tooth has partially come through – bacteria then enter the surrounding tissues, which can cause infection and disease;
• if the wisdom tooth is situated deep inside and causes the overlapping of the teeth: presses down on or malforms them;
• in some cases in orthodontic treatment (when there is a need of clearing up space for teeth straightening);
• with explicit indications – when the wisdom tooth hurts or begins to disintegrate, if the patient clearly wants to remove the wisdom tooth.
